Every object in motion makes a sound. The tick of a clock, a drop of liquid, a crackling fire, an anxious heart, a labored breath. The job of the sound designer is to decide what to enhance, what to suggest, what to leave unheard. When done well, we are unaware of the carefully designed sound is in a film.
The layering of sounds permeate social gatherings offering insights into emotion, intention, purpose. What information is being conveyed by a shout, a sigh, a chant, an ambulance, a thump, a bang.
Our discussion will start with a description of sound design and transition to the sounds of cities and social events, in particular Tiananmen Square in 1989.
