For most of the past, art was used as a tool to express political and religious attitudes. By the 19th century, however, art had become a way to express the depths of personal imagination. Unleashed from convention, art began to reflect individual thoughts and attitudes. The results are awe-inspiring, infuriating, and confusing. How can a red square on a white canvas be considered art? How can sound, without any pattern, be music?

Using examples from visual art, music, and perhaps writing, we will describe and explore some of the ways to experience and understand art. Having such knowledge, especially of modern art, can have immediate relevance to our everyday lives.
